Within one of Hong Kong’s most venerable private members’ clubs, a two-story wellness club has been shaped as much by light as by architecture. Working alongside Purcell Architects and Emma Maclean & Co, lighting designer Rosana Asencios devised a layered scheme that brings cohesion to the interiors while supporting physical activity, quiet restoration and social connection. A warm, welcoming foundation respects the historic setting, subtly shifting in intensity and character to suit each space.

The experience begins with a theatrical descent down a sculptural marble staircase. Light concealed within the handrails and beneath the treads traces the route, lending the arrival a quiet sense of ceremony.
Beyond reception, the atmosphere brightens — a side-lit vaulted ceiling casts even, energizing illumination across the primary fitness area, minimizing shadows and sharpening focus without feeling clinical.

In the restorative spaces, the tempo eases. Bespoke oval pendants and concealed cove lighting bathe the yoga and group studios in a soft, diffused glow, balanced by daylight from expansive windows. The lounges take on a more intimate, residential character, where decorative sconces, gently illuminated timber paneling and warm cove light create an inviting setting in which members can pause, unwind and connect.

The locker rooms extend this language of discreet luxury. Indirect light skims custom wood millwork, reinforcing a sense of privacy and calm, while vertical lighting integrated into the vanity mirrors provides flattering, practical illumination against richly veined green and gray marble.

The journey culminates in the steam room, where pinpoints of fiber-optic light form a celestial canopy above a softly glowing perimeter. It is an immersive final gesture — serene, considered and finely attuned to the rituals of well-being.
